Mort & Co’s fullblood Wagyu has claimed gold at the 2024 Australian Wagyu Association (AWA) Branded Beef Competition, kicking off a strong start to the awards season for Mort & Co.

Presented at the Australian Wagyu Association Wagyu Edge conference, this year held in Cairns, Mort & Co’s Master Selection returned to the competition with a win in what could be described historically as the company’s strongest category, Class 1 Fullblood. Wagyu Operations Manager, Berry Reynolds, was on hand to accept Mort & Co’s awards, and placed an emphasis on the level of competition making the achievements all the more significant.

“It’s without question the most elite carcass competition of its kind in Australia and inevitably very difficult to win. In the Fullblood class alone there were 18 entries, many of which would have sat comfortably in a fridge cabinet in Tokyo.”

With outstanding results in the fullblood category, the company also achieved a bronze in both the purebred and crossbred sections with The Phoenix. Hailing from Queensland’s Western Downs region to Central West New South Wales, this year’s entries were a testament to the strength of unwavering producer partnerships established by the company. In 2024, Mort & Co’s medal winning entries were supplied by the following Wagyu operations:

Joe Grose – 3D Genetics, Inverell NSW

Paul Steinohrt – Roma QLD

Peter Bishop – Bishop Wagyu, Cowra NSW

Mr Reynolds says the consistency at which Mort & Co is earning accolades, is representative of the calibre of Wagyu being produced by the company’s partners.

“This competition brings together Australia’s leading Wagyu producers. To have three of our producers recognised with a medal finish is validation of the strength of our relationships and the quality of our suppliers.” The results are an impressive start to this year’s awards season, with the Royal Queensland Food and Wine Show Branded Beef Competition soon to be announced and the Sydney Royal Fine Food Show to follow.
